A Safe and Healthy Summer: How We Care for Your Child at Camp
Sending your child to camp should be an exciting and worry-free experience. We understand that parents want assurance that their children are safe, well cared for, and in good hands when it comes to health and first aid. That’s why we’ve built a strong system to ensure that every camper stays safe, healthy, and able to enjoy every moment of their summer adventure.
Expert Medical Care On-Site
A Dedicated Camp Nurse
We are proud to have an experienced, highly qualified camp nurse on-site throughout the summer. Our camp nurse holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from West Chester University and has been a Registered Nurse (RN) since 2009. Her experience spans over a decade in both hospital settings and in patient education, ensuring your child receives top-quality care.
Trained First Aid Staff
Many of our camp staff members hold current First Aid and CPR certifications. During staff orientation, all counselors receive training from our camp nurse on sanitation, safety, and emergency response procedures. Only certified staff members are permitted to administer first aid, ensuring that every child receives proper care when needed.
First Aid Readiness
Certified staff members carry first aid kits, and additional kits are placed in key locations around camp, including the camp office, pool office, kitchen, and nature adventure area. An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is also available in the pool office, accessible only to those trained in its use.
Handling Common Health Concerns
Minor Injuries (Cuts, Scrapes, Bee Stings)
For small injuries, first aid is provided and documented. A call home or note is at the nurse’s discretion unless the injury requires additional medical attention.
Illness at Camp
If a camper begins feeling unwell, they will be evaluated by the camp nurse. Counselors are trained to recognize symptoms of illness and will promptly alert the nurse if a camper seems unwell.
When Parents Will Be Contacted
Parents will be notified if their child experiences:
A high fever (100.3°F or above)
Head injuries
Severe allergic reactions
Multiple bee stings
Fractures, dislocations, or sprains
Persistent stomach pain or vomiting
Any other health concern at the nurse’s discretion
For minor discomforts, the nurse may provide a rest period in the health center, which includes air-conditioned rest areas and supervised care.
Food Allergies & Medication Management
Food Allergy Precautions
We take food allergies very seriously. All camper allergies are documented and communicated to kitchen staff and counselors. When food is being served, a staff member with first aid certification is always present, carrying necessary emergency medications like EpiPens. The camp store also tracks allergies to prevent exposure, and alternative food options are always available.
Medication Administration
All medications (both prescription and over-the-counter) are kept in a secure, locked area under the supervision of the camp nurse. Medications must be in their original packaging and include a doctor’s prescription. The nurse administers medications according to the prescribed schedule and will always call home before giving any over-the-counter medications.
Keeping Campers Healthy Every Day
Encouraging Healthy Habits
Hydration: Most camper complaints relate to the summer heat, so we take hydration seriously! Water breaks are scheduled frequently, and campers are reminded to refill their water bottles throughout the day.
Nutrition: Campers are encouraged to eat a balanced lunch, including a protein source. Campers expend a lot of energy each day, and a missed meal can leave campers feeling sluggish or unwell. We provide a daily hot lunch, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, fruit, and a salad bar.
Rest & Cooling Breaks: Campers who feel overheated can cool off in the shade, rest in an air-conditioned space, or use ice packs as needed.
Morning Preparation Tips for Parents
Help your camper have a great day by ensuring they:
Get a good night’s sleep
Eat a nutritious breakfast
Bring a labeled water bottle
Arrive at camp ready to enjoy the day!
